Henry Poole & Co is often regarded as the founding father of Savile Row bespoke tailoring. The company began in 1806 when James Poole opened a linen draper and military outfitter shop in Brunswick Square, London. In 1846, after James’s death, his son Henry Poole moved operations to Savile Row, establishing a dedicated men’s tailoring presence and opening a main entrance at No. 36 (later renumbered)h.
Known for craftsmanship and innovation, Henry Poole created the first modern dinner jacket (tuxedo) in the 1860s by order of the Prince of Wales. The firm is headquartered at 15 Savile Row, London W1S 3PJ, and has held multiple royal warrants for its esteemed clientele.
Under the stewardship of the Cundey family for five generations, Henry Poole has preserved its bespoke tradition. Following a temporary move to Cork Street after the demolition of their original building in 1961, the firm returned to Savile Row in 1982 at No. 15, where it remains today.

Maurice Sedwell
Maurice Sedwell is a British bespoke tailoring house originally founded by Maurice Sedwell in 1938 on Fleet Street, London. After earning acclaim—including the Tailor & Cutter Academy’s Gold Medal in 1956—the business relocated to Savile Row in 1963, establishing its first premises at No. 9. From these roots, Maurice Sedwell built a reputation for ultra-bespoke craftsmanship, hand-cut garments, and one-to-one personal care, blending traditional Savile Row technique with thoughtful design.
In 1988, long-standing employee Andrew Ramroop acquired the firm, becoming the first Black owner on Savile Row and steering the company to further growth. Under his leadership, Maurice Sedwell moved to 19 Savile Row in 1994 and more recently to 9–10 Savile Row, First Floor, London W1S 3PF. Ramroop also founded the Savile Row Academy in 2008 to train future bespoke tailors. Today, Maurice Sedwell continues to serve a global clientele with individually designed, hand-tailored garments, upholding over eight decades of sartorial excellence.

Richard James is a bespoke Savile Row tailor and contemporary menswear house based at 29 Savile Row, London W1S 2EY. Founded in 1992 by designer Richard James and his business partner Sean Dixon, the brand spearheaded the “New Bespoke Movement” on the Row, revitalising its heritage with slim silhouettes, bold colours, and modern marketing techniques.
